Picture the scene; you're on holiday enjoying the warmth of the sun, cocktails on tap and relaxing by the pool.
Then it's back to reality when you notice your hair looks different. You start wondering: "Is that green I see? Has my hair faded or gone brassy?" Surely not... you only had your colour done last week!
Unfortunately, your eyes probably aren't deceiving you. Several holiday habits can affect both natural and coloured hair, leaving your beautiful blonde looking dull, faded or brassy.
The Two Biggest Causes of Holiday Hair Colour Damage
Understanding what happens to your hair helps you protect the investment you've made in your colour.
The First Factor – The Sun
UV rays affect your hair in a similar way they affect your skin. While your skin can create new melanin, hair cannot. Instead, UV rays gradually break down the pigment already inside the hair.
In natural hair, darker pigments break down first, exposing the warmer yellow and red tones underneath, making blonde hair appear brassier.
In coloured hair this process happens even faster because artificial colour molecules are far more vulnerable to UV damage.
UV exposure also weakens the hair cuticle by damaging keratin proteins and natural lipids, allowing colour to fade much more quickly.
The Second Factor – Chlorine & Salt Water
Although both happen while swimming, chlorine and salt affect your hair in completely different ways.
Chlorine is a powerful oxidiser that breaks down artificial colour molecules while stripping away your hair's natural protective oils. This leaves hair feeling dry, rough and more vulnerable to damage.
Despite the common myth, chlorine itself doesn't turn blonde hair green. Green tones usually come from copper found in pool water, which binds to the hair after reacting with chlorine.
Salt water works differently. Salt naturally draws moisture out of the hair, causing dehydration and forcing the hair cuticle to open.
Once the cuticle is open, every wash allows colour molecules to escape much more easily, resulting in noticeable fading throughout your holiday.
How to Protect Your Blonde Hair
Thankfully, there are several simple ways to keep your blonde looking fresh while enjoying your holiday.
Sun Protection
- Use UV-protecting leave-in products to help shield your colour from harmful sunlight.
- Wear a hat whenever possible to reduce direct UV exposure.
- Use antioxidant shampoos and deep conditioning masks containing ingredients such as Vitamin E, Green Tea Extract, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil or Shea Butter to restore moisture and minimise oxidation.
Swimming Protection
- Soak your hair with fresh water before swimming. Wet hair absorbs much less chlorine or salt water.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner or natural oil before entering the pool or sea to create a protective barrier.
- Wear a swim cap if possible for maximum protection.
- Rinse your hair immediately after swimming. Don't allow chlorine or salt water to dry on your hair.
- Use clarifying shampoos and acidic conditioning masks to remove impurities while helping the cuticle close and lock in moisture and colour.
Now You're Ready to Enjoy Your Holiday!
Sun, chlorine and salt water are the three biggest enemies of beautiful blonde hair, but with the right preparation you can enjoy your holiday without sacrificing your colour.
Protect your hair before swimming, shield it from UV rays and always restore moisture afterwards to keep your blonde looking salon-fresh for longer.
